Jack transforms his face. The True Jack Merridew

The painting of Jack’s face transforms his Identity into a new personality. First he has killed his beloved pig and got meat, yet he is still obsessed about the hunting. Quote “ He made one cheek and one eye-socket white, then he rubbed red over the other half of his face and slashed a black bar of charcoal across from his right ear to the left.” He changes his face into a hunter he is a total stranger. He came to the island as a leader of a choir and a little cocky. Now he is the man who is bloodthirsty and snarls. He has lost his old society being a good kid. This changes his Identity for the new society.

This section of the novel, ties in with the theme Civilization vs. Savagery. HE is showing he has lost all civilization in him and now is the savage person. Jack switches his ID to the bad kid he is. At the beginning he might have been mean, but when he paints his face it shows he’s a new kid, he is covering his old identity with this mask that he wears.

I think that the colors represent different things. First, Golding’s describes the red. The red is the color of blood. The author also says later on in the paragraph that Jack is bloodthirsty. Jack is now evil. Second is the white, it is almost half the face. This color is the civilization slowly fading away from him. Last is the black which represents death and is showing this is his new ID. Jack thinks I am a hunter and I will kill.
