Odysseus is pretty much saying humans are the weakest and most vulnerable race on the face of the earth. To be human you are weak , and if the gods are on your side you will never be hurt. And times can change fast if the gods have bad times. Odysseus has come to these conclusions because of all the pain he has gone through. He has seen huge monsters, Scylla, Cyclops, Charybdis and Lastrygonians whom have eaten humans like it’s a daily thing to do. He has had Gods turn against him and that caused his once fortunate self to become a lost man for 20 years and counting. He is a witness of the depiction of a human. They have no real power, the gods do. They have no control over a situation, and that has been exactly Odysseus’ adventure.
For the most part I don not agree with this depiction. First of all because, I personally do no believe in Zeus, Poseidon etc. Secondly, he has sad that thye are just feeble creatures and need gods to put spring in their knees. He forgets the mans ability to control his own fate. Every decision made every second can change the mans fate, I don’t believe it is about a greater being but about the mans decision making. That would also be how I would amend it, not the gods but the mans ability to make good and bad decisions. I also don’t agree with it because we are not the weak beings on earth. He forgets to mention the brain, and being smart. Also I think rats are more of the creatures he means in the first few sentences. Odysseus obviously has a bad depiction of his own race.
