I think that there are 2 interpretations for this poem. The first interpretation is that the woman likes fish. She likes to eat fish. The fish fits into her stomach and it is very fresh because she just caught it. Her open eye is her willingness to try fish. The second is a soul mate or person she knows is a good fit with her. The fit is painful to let go, to get. a hook out of the eye. And they caught each other with willingness to be partners or friends.

I think the speaker is Margaret Atwood, and she has a person who is close to her. The mood of the poem is content; they are content that they fit together. The occasion could possibly be a fishing trip, where these 2 people met. There is a simile “you fit into me- like a hook into an eye.” This simile explains how it would be so painful to let go of you. The imagery is a little disturbing, a hook into an eye. Yet after you read it a couple of times, you find the true meaning, of the hook and the eye. A perfect catch or fit together. There is only 16 words and 3 are repeated.
